Flora, 2018

Flora is a selection of black and white photographs exploring the ancient myths, stories and history that have contributed to the perceived meanings of flowers, leading them to be associated with many customs in various cultures throughout the world. The photographs are based on Roman mythology, although many cultures associate flowers with the life cycle, including birth and death.

Throughout time plants and flowers have always been associated with ancient deities. This collection contains various flowers that were used to represent the Roman Goddess Flora. Greeks had a floral goddess called Chloris, one of their oldest deities. The Romans called her Flora and honored her each year with a celebration known as the Floralia. She was often portrayed holding flowers, with her blossom-crowned image appearing on coins of the Roman republic. She was the goddess of blossoming, spring, flowers and crops which in that period represented survival and the continuation of life.

Flora is a collection of photographs produced into a handmade fabric hardback book that was exhibited at Free Range in the Old Truman Brewery, London in 2018.
